Another great day trip option is a visit to the picturesque town of Kennebunkport, Maine. Just a short drive up the coast from Portsmouth, Kennebunkport offers a delightful mix of history, charm, and natural beauty. For a true taste of New England, head to one of the waterfront seafood restaurants and indulge in a lobster roll or a plate of freshly shucked oysters.
If you’re in the mood for something different, you’ll find plenty of options, including Italian, Thai, Mexican, and more. Many of the restaurants in Portsmouth focus on using locally sourced ingredients, so you can expect a delicious meal that highlights the flavors of the region.

Treat yourself to a decadent slice of pie, a scoop of homemade ice cream, or a freshly baked cookie. With its abundance of sweet treats, Portsmouth is a dessert lover’s dream.
Where to Stay
The Sailmaker’s House, downtown Portsmouth
Portsmouth offers a range of options to suit every budget and preference. The city is home to several boutique hotels that exude charm and character, with their historic architecture and unique decor. These hotels often offer luxurious amenities, such as on-site spas, gourmet restaurants, and rooftop bars. If you prefer a more intimate and personalized experience, consider staying at one of the many bed and breakfasts scattered throughout the city. These charming establishments offer cozy rooms, delicious breakfasts, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The Sailmaker’s House, pictured above, is a popular historic boutique hotel located in the heart of downtown making it easy to walk almost anywhere you want to go. It dates back to 1822 when a sailmaker, John Holbrook, purchased it and used it to conduct his business. It has since been used as a residence and now as an inn.
For those on a budget, there are also several affordable hotels and motels in and around the city. These accommodations provide comfortable rooms and convenient amenities, making them a great choice for travelers looking for a budget-friendly option.
There are also several campgrounds and RV parks in the area for those who prefer a more outdoorsy experience.
Because I had Marriott Bonvoy Points, we stayed at the Courtyard Portsmouth on Market Street, which I also recommend. It’s a short 4-5 minute drive from the town center.

Transportation
Portsmouth is an hour-drive or a 90-minute bus ride from Boston. If you’ll be staying in downtown Portsmouth you could get away without a car if you choose.
Getting around Portsmouth is easy, thanks to its compact size and pedestrian-friendly streets. The city’s downtown area is best explored on foot, allowing you to soak in the historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere. Many of the city’s attractions, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance of each other, making it easy to navigate the city on foot.
Portsmouth is also a bike-friendly city. There are several bike lanes and paths throughout the city, as well as bike racks for convenient parking. Renting a bike is a great way to explore the city and its surrounding neighborhoods at your own pace.
For destinations outside of the downtown area, there are several transportation options available. Portsmouth has a reliable public transportation system, with buses that connect various parts of the city and the surrounding area. Additionally, rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are readily available in Portsmouth, providing a convenient and efficient way to get around.
For those who prefer to rent a car as we did, there are several public parking garages and lots throughout the city that are reasonably priced (~$2/hour), as well as metered street parking. However, keep in mind that parking in the downtown area can be limited during peak times, so it’s advisable to arrive early or consider alternative transportation options.
