Many people try hard to avoid having airport layovers when traveling. I, too, prefer to get to my destination as soon as possible, but I’ve learned to make the best of it over the years. I actually don’t even dread it. I see it as a way to sit, relax, and get a few things done.
We often book flights at strange times because we want them to be as inexpensive as possible. We know that sometimes means spending a while in airports, but we’re okay with it. We never have a problem filling the time.
Most airports have many food and drink options, plenty of shopping, and nice lounges. It can be a treat sometimes.
WHAT TO DO IN AIRPORTS
Here are a few ways to make the most of a long layover.
Pack Smart
You never know when you might be in for the long haul, so it’s essential to pack well. Divide your carry-on into sections for different needs like snacks, entertainment, and toiletries. Think about packing some granola bars, nuts, or even protein shakes if you want to avoid spending money on airport food. Include a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Most airports have water refill stations.
Pack a charger for your phone, laptop, iPad, etc., and a long cord. I also like always to have a portable charger, just in case there’s no outlet nearby or one on the plane.
Get Comfortable
Securing a comfortable spot is crucial during long airport layovers. After you’ve navigated through security and have your boarding passes in hand, don’t just plop down at the nearest gate. Take a walk to scope out the terminal and find a cozy spot that is quieter and more comfortable. Some airports have cushioned benches, reclining chairs, and even designated quiet zones. Keep an eye out for outlets to charge your devices as well.
Treat Yourself
Since you’re facing a long layover, why not indulge a bit? Check to see if your airport has unique dining options or international cuisine you wouldn’t usually try. Go shopping in the many stores larger airports have. You could even get a quick massage or facial if there’s a spa!
If you have lounge access—whether through frequent flyer status or a day pass—definitely make the most of it. Airport lounges offer free food, drinks, and sometimes even shower facilities. It’s like turning your layover into a mini-spa day, adding a dash of luxury to your adventure.
Work or Play
When you’re stuck in an airport, it might be tempting to write off the entire day as a waste, but it doesn’t have to be. Stay productive and take advantage of the airport’s Wi-Fi to catch up on work. Respond to those pending emails, finalize a project, or even write a blog post.
If work isn’t on the agenda, you can dive into that novel you’ve been meaning to read or download a fun new game or e-book. Think of this as “me time” to catch up on tasks or hobbies you enjoy but never seem to have time for.
Sleep
Sometimes, you need a nap, especially if you have a long overnight flight and have difficulty sleeping on a plane (like me!). Some airports are more sleep-friendly than others, but there are always options, even if it turns out to be the floor.
Many airport lounges offer reclining chairs or dedicated sleep areas, providing a quiet and comfortable space to rest. While it may not be a full-on bed, the atmosphere is generally more conducive to sleep compared to the busy main terminal areas.
Sleeping Pods are like compact hotel rooms within the airport, offering just enough space for a bed and your carry-on. Sleeping pods are perfect for those looking for privacy and basic amenities without leaving the terminal. You can book them by the hour, making them convenient for power naps or overnight stays. We booked a pod at Heathrow Airport in London once for 3 hours. It was so worth it!!
There are also sometimes hotels within airports. These range from budget-friendly to luxurious, providing the most comfortable and private sleeping option. Although this can be a pricier choice, the benefit of a whole night’s sleep and hotel amenities can make it worth the splurge if you have an overnight layover.
Wherever you decide to get some sleep, always remember to set an alarm so you don’t miss your next flight!
Keep Active
While it’s tempting to nap or waste time scrolling on your phone during long layovers, staying active will keep your energy levels up and make the time go by faster. After you’ve relaxed and recharged, take a walk around the terminal, window-shop at the duty-free, or engage in some light stretching to keep your muscles from stiffening up.
Staying active is a great way to burn some calories and be more energetic. It isn’t just about physical movement. It’s about making you feel better and making your layover more enjoyable.
Airport Lounges
Hanging out in airport lounges is the best way to pass the time. They offer a range of comforts from free food and drinks to showers and, sometimes, even spa services. The Wi-Fi is usually faster, the chairs more comfortable, and the atmosphere more tranquil compared to the general terminal areas.
You can get access to lounges at airports all over the world with some credit cards. We have access with our Chase Sapphire Reserve card. If you don’t have a membership with a credit card or through a paid membership, consider getting a day pass. You may not be able to survive any other way, though, once you do!
Remember…
You don’t have to think of long airport layovers as bad. Take advantage of all you have access to in an airport. Enjoy it, and use it as a time to be productive!
